Cornwall & Isles of Scilly
Landscape Character Study
This website is all about the landscapes of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The map provides information about the
Landscape Character Areas of Cornwall and advice to help you understand better how the landscape around us has been formed, influenced and changed over time.
Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are made up of a range of diverse landscapes with a rich diversity of heritage and natural assets. This information can help you to see how your actions affect the landscape around you and what you can do to help look after the unique character of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
The Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Landscape Study was carried out between 2005 and 2007.
The Study identified 40 Landscape Character Areas within Cornwall and 5 for the Isles of Scilly based on their component Landscape Descriptions Units. By going to the Map
you can access descriptions about each Landscape Character Area which bring together information about the natural, historic and visual environment as well as giving advice about planning and land management guidelines. Additional information at the more local scale is also available for the Landscape Description Units.
This resource will continue to be developed through public consultation and further data analysis. The work will have a variety of applications but in particular it will provide an important evidence base for the future Local Development Framework for Cornwall which is being developed through the Local Government Review process.
(Please note that at this stage the work for the Isles of Scilly has not been completed and therefore the Landscape Description Unit Profiles and Landscape Character Area Descriptions for the Isles of Scilly are not yet available)

Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Landscape charter Study
2005-7
The launch of the Cornwall Landscape website in April 2008, provided the opportunity to undertake further public consultation (as advised in the consultants report to the project) on the website and on the 40 Landscape Character Area Descriptions and the supporting Landscape Description Unit profiles (of which there are over 300).
Publicity for the on-line consultation was provided on the web-site, initially for a 3 month period from July to September 2008. Consultation forms were made available both to use on-line and to print off. As part of the publicity for this exercise individual letters (including a paper survey form) were sent out to Parish Councils, Councillors and Environmental Groups and organisations. The consultation period was subsequently extended to December to allow as much time as possible for parish councils and others to respond.
Changes will now be made to the Landscape Character Descriptions in response to the consultation comments. This resource will then be taken forward as an evidence base for the new Local Development Framework for Cornwall.
